Zetia and its Uses
Generic Zetia is taken orally in conjunction with a statin drug and aids in lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the blood. Generic Zetia is added to the statin treatment because it works in a different way to statins (which lower cholesterol by preventing its production by the liver) and so it can boost their cholesterol lowering effect.
Generic Zetia is used for patients who cannot control their cholesterol levels by diet alone. Generic Zetia can be used by itself or with certain other medicines to treat high cholesterol.
Generic Zetia specifically acts at level of the brush border of the small intestine by preventing the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream.
You should stay on a cholesterol-lowering diet while taking Zetia. Generic Zetia does not help you lose weight.
Generic Zetia can also be used to treat people with a rare inherited disorder called homozygous sitosterolaemia, where there are raised levels of plant sterols that are similar to cholesterol in the blood. In this case Zetia is used on its own, together with a cholesterol-lowering diet.
|| Top || Working Mechanism of Zetia
Generic Zetia works by preventing cholesterol from being absorbed from the small intestine into the bloodstream. Generic Zetia prevents cholesterol and other plant sterols that are consumed in the diet from being absorbed into the bloodstream. Generic Zetia medication also prevents cholesterol released from the bile duct into the intestine from being reabsorbed into the bloodstream. The overall result is a reduction in cholesterol levels in the blood.

Food and Drug Interactions with Zetia
- If you have been prescribed cholestyramine or colestipol as well as Generic Zetia, you should take Zetia at least two hours before, or at least four hours after taking the cholestyramine or colestipol. This is because these medicines can make Zetia less effective if they are taken at the same time.
- Generic Zetia is not recommended for people taking fibrate medicines to lower cholesterol, e.g. bezafibrate, gemfibrozil.
- The immunosuppressant ciclosporin may increase the body's exposure to Generic Zetia. Conversely, Generic Zetia may increase the blood level of ciclosporin.
- People who are taking the anticoagulant warfarin should have their blood-clotting time (INR) monitored after they start taking Zetia, in order to check that this medicine has not affected the action of the warfarin.
