Synthroid and its Uses
Generic Synthroid is a type of medication called "levothyroxine sodium".
Generic Synthroid is a thyroid hormone supplement used to treat people who do not produce enough thyroid hormone on their own. Synthroid helps to reduce the symptoms of low thyroid hormone such as weight gain, sensitivity to cold, lack of energy, and dry skin.
|| Top || Working Mechanism of Synthroid
The thyroid gland produces and releases two hormones: thyroxine and liothyronine. In other areas of the body, thyroxine is subsequently converted into liothyronine, which is a more active form of thyroxine. These hormones are responsible for maintaining a normal rate of metabolism in the body.
When the thyroid gland is unable to produce normal amounts of thyroxine, the level of thyroid hormones in the blood decreases (hypothyroidism). This results in a reduced rate of metabolism, leading to symptoms such as weight gain, intolerance to cold and tiredness.
Generic Synthroid are given to replace the thyroxine that would normally be produced naturally by the thyroid gland.
Once the thyroid gland becomes unable to produce thyroxine, it will generally not return to normal function. Therefore, once Generic Synthroid is started, it usually needs to be taken for the rest of a person's life.

Synthroid Dose
MIssed Dose of Synthroid
Take the missed dose of Synthroid as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose of Synthroid and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of Synthroid.
Excess Dose of Synthroid
Generic Synthroid in excess dose may show symptoms such as chest pain, nervousness, trouble sleeping, tremor, rapid heartbeat, nausea, headache, fever, sweating, shortness of breath, heat intolerance, irregular menses, increased appetite, decreased weight, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
Conditions for Storage of Synthroid
Store Store Synthroid at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Food and Drug Interactions with Synthroid
- Antiepileptic medicines such as phenytoin and carbamazepine may increase the breakdown of Synthroid by the body. People taking antiepileptic medicines may therefore need larger doses of Synthroid.
- Generic Synthroid may increase the anti-blood-clotting effect of anticoagulant medicines such as warfarin. The dose of the anti-clotting medicine may need to be decreased.
- The level of cardiac glycosides (eg digoxin) in the body may be reduced in individuals taking thyroid hormones, and an alteration of the dosage may be required.
- Generic Synthroid may increase the effect of tricyclic antidepressant medicines. This may also result in an increase in side effects.
- The amount of Synthroid absorbed from the gut is decreased if it is taken with colestyramine.

Contraindications with Synthroid
Generic Synthroid is contraindicated in the following:
- Thyrotoxicosis
- Allergic to one or any of its ingredients
- Pregnancy

Precautions with Synthroid
Synthroid medication should be used with caution in:
- A disease in which an individual produces large amounts of dilute urine and is constantly thirsty (diabetes insipidus)
- Any condition causing decreased function of the adrenal glands
- Decreased production of all hormones produced by the pituitary (panhypopituitarism)
- Diabetes mellitus
- Elderly people
- Heart disease
- History of heart attack
- Breastfeeding: It is also safe to take thyroid hormones if you are breast-feeding a baby. Synthroid does pass into breast milk, but it will not harm a nursing infant.

Adverse effects with Synthroid
The adverse effects associated with Generic Synthroid are:
- Faster than normal heart beat (tachycardia)
- Diarrhoea
- Difficulty in sleeping (insomnia)
- Excitement
- Shaking, usually of the hands (tremor)
- Muscle cramps
- Sweating
- Muscle weakness
- Awareness of your heart beat (heart palpitations)
- Weight loss
- Abnormal heart beats (arrhythmias)
- Chest pain (angina)
