Proscar and its uses?

Working Mechanism of Proscar
Generic Proscar lowers levels of a key hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is a major cause of prostate growth. Lowering DHT leads to shrinkage of the enlarged prostate gland in most men. This can lead to gradual improvement in urine flow and symptoms over the next several months. Generic Proscar will help reduce the risk of developing a sudden inability to pass urine and the need for surgery.

In the body, the hormone testosterone is converted to a more active form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), by 5-alpha reductase. Generic Proscar blocks the action of 5-alpha reductase, and therefore prevents the activation of testosterone.

The enlargement of the prostate gland, which often occurs in men with advancing age (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia), is dependant upon testosterone being converted to DHT within the prostate gland. In the absence of DHT the prostate shrinks. Therefore, by decreasing the amount of DHT, Generic Proscar helps shrink the prostate.

The prostate gland is found only in men and lies at the top of the tube connecting the bladder to the outside (urethra).
