Migranal and its Uses
Generic Migranal is used to help relieve the pain of migraine headaches and cluster headaches.
Generic Migranal belongs to a family of medicines called ergot alkaloids. These medications work by constricting blood vessels in the head. This relieves the dilation (widening) of blood vessels, which is related to migraine headache pain.
|| Top || Working Mechanism of Migranal The cause of migraine is not fully understood but it appears the widening of blood vessels in the brain. This may involve the chemical serotonin.
Generic Migranal temporarily constricts blood vessels around the skull and throughout the body. It is most effective if taken at the first sign of a migraine attack.
Caffeine is traditionally included, as it is believed to enhance the analgesic effects.

Migranal Dose Missed Dose of Migranal
Missing a dose of Migranal is not usually a problem since Generic Migranal is used on an as-needed basis.
Excess Dose of Migranal
Generic Migranal in excess dose may show symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, weakness, muscle pain, numbness in your fingers or toes, gangrene, itching, confusion, drowsiness, convulsions, and possibly death.
Conditions for Storage of Migranal
Store Migranal at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

|| Top || Food and Drug Interactions with Migranal
- There is an increased risk of peripheral vasoconstriction (leading to cold, white extremities) when Migranal is taken together with beta-blockers.
- When taken together with the following antibiotics there may be an increased risk of vomiting and peripheral ischaemia (lack of blood to the extremities:
- erythromycin
- oleandomycin

Contraindications with Migranal
Migranal is contraindicated in the following
- Angina pectoris
- Breastfeeding
- Coronary artery disease
- Cramping pain in the calf muscles brought on by exercise, due to narrowing of the arteries in the calves (intermittent claudication)
- Disease involving the blood vessels (vascular disease)
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Known sensitivity or allergy to any ingredient
- Narrowing of the blood vessels in the hands, causing numb and painful fingers (Raynaud's disease)
- Poor blood flow to the extremities (hands and feet)(peripheral vascular insufficiency).
- Pregnancy

Precautions with Migranal
Migranal should be used with caution in
- Alcohol intake
- Anaemia
- Hyperthyroidism
- Infection of the blood or body tissues with pus-forming or other pathogenic organisms (sepsis)
- Severe inflammation of the liver, with a rapid onset and of short duration (acute hepatitis)

Adverse effects with Migranal
The adverse effects associated with Migranal are
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Muscle cramps
- Joint pain (arthralgia)
- Cold extremities, e.g. hands and feet
- Pins and needles (paraesthesia)
- Dizziness
- Heart attack (myocardial infarction)
- Numbness
- Difficulty in breathing (dyspnoea)
- Inflammation of the wall of a vein with a blood clot forming in the affected segment of vein (local thrombophlebitis)
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Chest pain
- Spasm of the arteries
- Inadequate blood flow leading to low levels of oxygen in the tissues of the extremities (peripheral ischaemia), which may lead to gangrene
