Micardis and its Uses
Micardis is a member of the class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists.

Micardis is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure).

Micardis reduce blood pressure by blocking the actions of a chemical (angiotensin II) that causes blood vessels to constrict or tighten.

When blood pressure is allowed to remain high for a long time, the blood vessels of the heart, kidneys and brain may become damaged. This puts a person at increased risk for heart attack and stroke as well as kidney failure and blindness. Keeping blood pressure in the normal range can reduce the risk of suffering these conditions.

Working Mechanism of Micardis
Micardis works by preventing the action of a hormone in the body called angiotensin II.

Angiotensin II normally acts on special receptors in the body, with two main results. Firstly, it causes the peripheral blood vessels to narrow, and secondly, it stimulates the production of another hormone called aldosterone. Aldosterone causes salt and water to be retained by the kidneys, which increases the volume of fluid in the blood vessels.

Micardis blocks the receptors that angiotensin II acts on, and so prevents its actions. The main result of this is that the peripheral blood vessels are allowed to widen, which means that there is more space and less resistance in these blood vessels. This is the main mechanism by which the pressure in the blood vessels is lowered.

Blocking the actions of angiotensin II also reduces the action of aldosterone on the kidneys. The result of this is an increase in the amount of fluid removed from the blood by the kidneys. This decreases the amount of fluid in the blood vessels, which also lessens the resistance and pressure in the blood vessels.

The combined overall effect of these changes is to lower the blood pressure.

Micardis Dose
Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of Micardis.

Micardis in excess dose may show symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, fainting, and a fast heartbeat.

Conditions for Storage of Micardis

Store Micardis at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Food and Drug Interactions with Micardis
The blood pressure lowering effect of Micardis may be increased if it is taken with alcohol or any of the following medicines, which can also reduce blood pressure:

• other medicines for high blood pressure
• narcotics
• barbiturates
• antidepressants
• baclofen

If your blood pressure falls too low due to the combination of medicines it might make you feel dizzy, particularly when moving from sitting or lying to a standing position. If this is the case let your doctor know.

• Micardis may increase blood potassium levels. The amount of potassium in your blood should be monitored if you are taking this medicine with any of the following, which can also increase blood potassium:
• potassium-sparing diuretics such as spironolactone
• potassium supplements
• potassium-containing salt substitutes
• heparin
• ciclosporin
• Micardis may increase the blood levels of the following medicines:
  • digoxin
  • lithium

If it is necessary for you to take either of these medicines in combination with Micardis your doctor may need to monitor their blood levels to make sure they do not rise too high.

Contraindications with Micardis
Micardis is contraindicated in the following:

• Severely decreased liver function
• Blockage of the bile duct (biliary obstruction)
• Inherited intolerance to fructose in the diet
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Allergy to one or any of its ingredients

Precautions with Micardis
Micardis should be used with caution in:

• Kidney disease
• Narrowing of the artery which supplies blood to the kidneys (renal artery stenosis)
• Decreased kidney function
• Mild to moderately decreased liver function
• Decreased fluid volume in the body, e.g. due to diuretic therapy, low salt diet, kidney dialysis, diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration
• Diseases of the stomach and intestines
• Heart disease caused by inadequate blood flow to the heart (ischaemic heart disease)
• Heart disease characterized by thickening of the internal heart muscle and a blockage inside the heart (hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy)
• Heart valve disease (mitral valve stenosis)
• Narrowing of the main artery of the body (aortic stenosis)
• Severe heart failure
• High levels of potassium in the blood (hyperkalaemia)
