Flomax and its Uses
Generic Flomax is used to treat symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
Generic Flomax belongs to a class of medicines called alpha blockers. Flomax works by blocking alpha receptors in certain areas of the body.
As men get older, benign
enlargement of the prostate is a problem that sometimes occurs.
Generic
Flomax helps relax the muscles in the prostate and the opening
of the bladder to help increase urine flow.
Though Generic
Flomax does not actually help reduce the size of an enlarged
prostate, it does help to treat its symptoms.
|| Top || Working Mechanism of Flomax
Alpha-receptors are present on the muscle in the prostate
gland. This gland is found only in men and lies at the top of the
tube connecting the bladder to the outside (urethra). The prostate
gland often enlarges with advancing age ( Benign
Prostatic Hyperplasia ) and presses on the urethra. This can
cause urinary symptoms such as poor flow of urine. By blocking the
alpha receptors, Generic
Flomax causes the muscle in the prostate to relax.
As the prostate gland enlarges, it can exert pressure
on the urethra, the tube that carries urine away
from the bladder to be expelled. This causes a weak urine
stream or a feeling of not being able to empty the bladder
completely. Generic
Flomax helps to relax the muscles in the prostate and the opening
of the bladder. This helps the stream of urine
to flow more freely and the bladder to be emptied completely.
Generic
Flomax does not shrink the prostate gland. Therefore, although
symptoms are improved with treatment, prostate surgery may still be
needed sometime in the future if the prostate gland continues to enlarge.
