Cipro and its Uses
Generic Cipro belongs to a group of broad-spectrum antibiotics called the quinolones. Generic Cipro is effective against a broad range of bacteria.
Generic Cipro stops growth of bacteria by inhibiting the reproduction and repair of their genetic material (DNA).
Generic Cipro is used for the treatment of:
- Gonorrhea
- Infection of the blood (septicaemia or blood poisoning)
- Infection of the organs associated with breathing, including nasal passages, sinuses, windpipe and lungs (respiratory tract)
- Infections of the stomach and intestines
- Infections of the urinary tract
- Prevention of infection (usually after surgery)
- Prevention of meningococcal meningitis
- Treatment of chest infections in children 5 years and over who have cystic fibrosis or infections in children where the benefit exceeds the risk
|| Top || Working Mechanism of Cipro
Generic Cipro works by entering the bacterial cell and inhibiting a chemical called DNA-gyrase, which is involved in the production of genetic material (DNA). This therefore prevents the bacteria from reproducing and their growth is stopped.

Cipro Dose
Missed Dose of Cipro
Take the missed dose of Cipro as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose of Cipro, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose of Cipro. Do not take a double dose of Cipro.
Excess Dose of Cipro
Generic Cipro in excess dose may show symptoms such as seizures.
Conditions for Storage of Generic Cipro
Store Generic Cipro at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Food and Drug interactions with Cipro
- When used with Generic Cipro the following medications increase the risk of convulsions:
- Non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's)
- Theophylline (ciprofloxacin also increases the concentration of theophylline in the blood - monitor theophylline levels)
- The blood thinning effects of warfarin and nicoumalone are enhanced with Cipro.
- Generic Cipro increases the risk of kidney damage when used with cyclosporin.
- The manufacturer advises that opioid analgesics be avoided when using Generic Cipro, as it decreases the levels of Generic Cipro in the blood.
- Sucralfate reduces the absorption of Cipro - do not take within four hours of taking Generic Cipro.

Contraindications with Cipro
Generic Cipro is contraindicated in the following
- Not generally recommended in children and growing adolescents except for chest infection attacks in cystic fibrosis patients or where benefit exceeds risk
- Generic Cipro should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients.
- Generic Cipro is not approved for use by children younger than 18 years of age (except for use in post-exposure inhalational anthrax). It may interfere with bone development.

Generic Cipro should be used with caution in
- Decreased kidney function
- Epilepsy
- History of convulsions, e.g. epilepsy
- History of disorders of the Central Nervous System (CNS)
- Lack of the enzyme G6PD in the blood (G6PD deficiency)
- Urine less acidic (alkalosis)
