Bactrim DS is a combination of two antibiotics namely sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Sulfamethoxazole belongs to the sulphonamide group of antibiotics. Bactrim DS is used to treat infections of the urinary tract, middle ear, and respiratory tract (bronchitis). This drug is also used for traveler's diarrhea, and Pneumocystis carini pneumonia in AIDS or cancer patients. Working Mechanism of Bactrim DS Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole both work inside the bacterial cell, where they stop the manufacture of a substance called folic acid (folate). Folic acid is necessary for the production of genetic material (DNA). Without the production of DNA the bacteria is not able to reproduce, and the spread of the infection is stopped (a bacteriostatic effect). Missed Dose of Bactrim DS Take the missed Dose of Bactrim DS as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the Dose of Bactrim DS you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of Bactrim DS. If you have only missed one dose, you can take the rest of your scheduled doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals Excess Dose of Bactrim DS Bactrim DS in excess dose may show symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, headache, yellowing of the skin or eyes, decreased urine production, bloody urine, and coma.
