Bactrim DS and its Uses

Bactrim DS is a combination of two antibiotics namely sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Sulfamethoxazole belongs to the sulphonamide group of antibiotics.

Bactrim DS is used to treat infections of the urinary tract, middle ear, and respiratory tract (bronchitis). This drug is also used for traveler's diarrhea, and Pneumocystis carini pneumonia in AIDS or cancer patients.

Working Mechanism of Bactrim DS

Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole both work inside the bacterial cell, where they stop the manufacture of a substance called folic acid (folate). Folic acid is necessary for the production of genetic material (DNA). Without the production of DNA the bacteria is not able to reproduce, and the spread of the infection is stopped (a bacteriostatic effect).

Missed Dose of Bactrim DS

Take the missed Dose of Bactrim DS as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the Dose of Bactrim DS you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of Bactrim DS. If you have only missed one dose, you can take the rest of your scheduled doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals

Excess Dose of Bactrim DS

Bactrim DS in excess dose may show symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, headache, yellowing of the skin or eyes, decreased urine production, bloody urine, and coma.

Conditions for Storage of Bactrim DS

Store Bactrim DS at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Bactrim DS Tablets: Sulphamethoxazole 400 mg and Trimethoprim 80 mg, Sulphamethoxazole 800 mg and Trimethoprim 160 mg.

Food and Drug Interactions with Bactrim DS

• Bactrim DS increases the risk of kidney damage if this drug is taken with cyclosporin.
• Bactrim DS when given with the anti-malarial pyrimethamine may decrease the levels of folic acid in the blood.
• Bactrim DS when given together with the antiepileptic drug phenytoin may increase the level of phenytoin in the blood and may also enhance the effects of the drug in lowering the levels of folic acid in the blood.
• Bactrim DS increases the risk of developing a disturbed heart rhythm when given with amiodarone. These medicines should not be used together.
• The blood thinning effects of nicoumalone and warfarin are increased.
• The effect of sulphonylureas may be enhanced leading to low blood sugar levels.
• Bactrim DS when given together with methotrexate will enhance the antifolate effect of the two drugs and may lead to toxic side effects.
• Bactrim DS may increase the blood levels of the antivirals lamivudine and zalcitabine. The use of high doses of Bactrim DS should be avoided with lamivudine.
• Bactrim DS may reduce the effectiveness of the combined oral contraceptive pill.

Contraindications with Bactrim DS

Bactrim DS is contraindicated in the following:

• Kidney failure
• Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
• Life long inherited blood diseases which can cause a variety of symptoms, including mental health problems (porphyrias)
• Liver failure
• Not approved for use in children younger than 2 months of age.
• Allergy to one or any of its ingredients
