Avodart and its Uses
Generic Avodart is used to treat symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate to:
- improve symptoms
- reduce the risk of acute urinary retention (a complete blockage of urine flow)
- reduce the risk of the need for BPH-related
surgery
Generic
Avodart, a second-generation 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor,
is the first and only medicine to inhibit both the type 1 and type
2 enzymes responsible for the conversion of testosterone to DHT
(dihydrotestosterone), the primary cause of prostate
growth. Avodart's
dual inhibition decreases levels of DHT by 90 percent at two weeks
and 93 percent at two years.
By reducing DHT levels, Generic
Avodart reduces the size of an enlarged prostate.
Generic Avodart is a new drug that many believe to be more effective than Propecia or Proscar as Avodart inhibits both type I & type II 5 alpha reductase whereas Propecia or Proscar is only effective against type II 5AR.
|| Top || Working Mechanism of Avodart
Generic Avodart works by inhibiting the action of a compound in the body called 5-alpha reductase. This compound is called an enzyme, and is responsible for converting the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a more active form of testosterone.
The enlargement of the prostate gland, (known
medically as benign prostatic hyperplasia), which
often occurs in men with advancing age, is dependant upon testosterone
being converted to DHT within the prostate gland.
In the absence of DHT the prostate gland shrinks.
By decreasing the amount of testosterone that is converted into
DHT, Generic
Avodart therefore helps to shrink the prostate
gland.

Avodart Dose Missed Dose of Avodart
Take the missed dose of Avodart as soon as you remember during the same day. However, if you do not remember until the next day, skip the dose you missed and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of Avodart.
Excess Dose of Avodart
Avodart in excess dose does not show any symptoms.

Store Avodart at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Food and Drug interactions with Avodart
The following medicines may increase the level of Generic Avodart in the blood by interfering with its breakdown by the body:
- ritonavir
- indinavir
- nefazodone
- itraconazole
- ketoconazole taken by mouth
- diltiazem
- verapamil

Contraindications with Avodart
Generic Avodart is contraindicated in the following:
- Allergy to other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, e.g. Finasteride (Propecia & Proscar)
- Children or adolescents under 18 years of age
- Severely decreased liver function
- Women: Do not donate blood while taking Avodart and for at least 6 months after the last dose to prevent pregnant women from receiving Avodart through blood transfusion. Generic Avodart is for use by men only, therefore information about its use by pregnant or breastfeeding women is not applicable. However, Generic Avodart may pass into semen, and for this reason men whose partner is or may be pregnant should use a barrier form of contraception such as a condom during sex, to avoid any possible risks to a developing fetus.
