Lasix and its Uses
Lasix (Furosemide) belongs to the class of medications called loop diuretics.
Diuretics like Lasix (Furosemide) are used for the treatment of edema (fluid retention) that occurs with congestive heart failure and disorders of the liver, kidney, and lung. Lasix (Furosemide) is also used to control high blood pressure.
Lasix medication works by increasing the amount of urine produced and excreted and by removing excessive water (edema).
|| Top || Working Mechanism of Lasix
Lasix (Furosemide) acts in the kidney to remove excess water from the blood, by causing an increase in the removal of salts such as potassium and sodium. This removal of salts causes water to be drawn out of the blood and into the kidneys, where it is then excreted in the urine. Removing water from the blood causes a decrease in the volume of fluid circulating through the blood vessels. This drop in fluid volume decreases the effort required by the heart to pump blood around the body.
There are many conditions, which may lead to an accumulation of fluid in the body (oedema). Lasix (Furosemide) is commonly used in conditions such as heart failure, where the pumping mechanism of the heart is less effective. It is used to relieve the symptoms of heart failure, such as the shortness of breath seen with fluid on the lungs.
At higher doses the amount of water drawn from the blood into the urine is much greater, therefore Lasix (Furosemide) is also used when there is reduced production of urine in patients with kidney failure.
Lasix (Furosemide) is also used to remove excess fluid associated with liver failure, hypertension, and poor circulation in the periphery (i.e. arms and legs).

Missed Dose of Lasix
If you take one dose of Lasix daily, take the missed dose of Lasix as soon as you remember within 12 hours. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip the dose you missed and take only the next regularly scheduled dose of Lasix. Do not take a double dose of Lasix.
Excess Dose of Lasix
Lasix (Furosemide) in excess dose may show symptoms such as weakness, muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, fainting, confusion, irregular pulse, nausea, and vomiting.

Food and Drug Interactions with Lasix
- Lasix (Furosemide) causes a loss of potassium (hypokalaemia) from the blood, which may increase the risk of adverse effects if it is taken with cardiac glycosides such as digoxin.
- Corticosteroids such as hydrocortisone may also cause potassium loss, therefore severe depletion may occur if they are used with Lasix.
- When taken together with medicines that decrease blood pressure there is an increased risk of a large drop in blood pressure and fainting, especially when given with the first dose of ACE inhibitors (e.g. captopril).
- The blood pressure lowering and diuretic effects of Lasix may be reduced or abolished when used together with indomethacin and possibly other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAID's).
- Lasix (Furosemide) may reduce the ability of the body to remove lithium, leading to increased amounts of lithium in the blood. This may give rise to increased adverse effects.
|| Top || Contraindications with Lasix
Lasix (Furosemide) is contraindicated in the following:
- Allergy to any of the active ingredients
- Allergy to medicines from the sulphonamide group, e.g. the antibiotic sulphamethoxazole
- Deficiency in the concentration of salts in the blood (electrolyte deficiency)
- Kidney failure, preventing production of urine (anuria)
- Liver disease that is causing the patient to become unconscious (precomatose state).
